Cupid’s Heart Quilt

I’m so thrilled to be a participant on Day One of the today’s fabulous Put A Little Love In Your Quilt blog hop by Just Let Me Quilt.  Our main requirement was to put a heart somewhere on our project.  love logoMy entry is not posted as early as I had hoped, but it’s finally here.  I actually made several projects for the blog, including the heart bag that I posted recently and gave to a friend.  There’s also a small “text” scrappy crumb doll quilt which I’ll show at a later time.  However, the project that I settled upon is this Cupid’s Heart Quilt.  The top is not yet quilted but I plan on showing it as soon as possible.  Life has gotten in the way of my creative time, but that hopefully will stop.  I am happy with how this top (or flimsy) came out. It has all the perkiness of the season and some of my favorite fabrics.

The central 7 x 7″ paper pieced Crazy Patch Heart pattern can be found free on Craftsy. _MG_0757 (1)  (I have used this same heart pattern several times over, including on a Purple Heart doll quilt that was shared about a year ago.)  The crazy heart pattern can be shrunk to a tiny size, which I’ve done many times as well.  It’s a freebie that keeps on giving so chick on it or just go to Craftsy.com and check it out!!

This particular paper pieced pattern is very, very simple to use.  If new to this method, then I highly recommend this pattern as a first one to begin with.  The gorgeous purple fabric on the right top of the heart is one of my all-time favorite fabrics.  It’s from a coveted piece of Good Fortune by Kate Sprain.  That purple fabric is discontinued but luckily, I was able to snag a piece of it.  While it’s tough cutting off a piece of that vibrant jewel shade, everything it touches then becoming a favorite project! After I made the central heart, I used some old batik fabric for some strip blocks. If you notice carefully, the strips of fabrics are angled in different directions to draw attention to the middle. The corner ones are diagonal but the central ones are straight.  Because the heart was already seven inches, I chose to keep my surrounding blocks that same measurement.  The quilt could have been finished at this point, but honestly, I’m grappling with liking it so much that I held off while considering enlarging it to a lap size.  I’m not sure how I’ll like that but I might just have to complete this one and try a repeat in different colors.

  4. I love this project, I think it would be awesome with other types of blocks in the middle also, such as the star you mentioned, but what really fascinates me about this project is the outside blocks. I love how they are laid out and I think that’s what really makes the middle shine.

    • You are right but with my family of all boys, this won’t stay pretty for long. It is tempting to add a girly touch to a main part of the house though….hmmmm.

    I love the scrappy blocks radiating out of the heart~like love growing and spreading!

    • We can do so much with our printers at home. I did find a bunch of small heart patterns as well though. I posted a few weeks ago about a 4.5″ paper pieced heart pattern that was the perfect size for a zippered tote. It seems whatever we need can be found somewhere on the internet!   26. That is sizzling!!! It has so much life to it. My coveted fabric is a batik from Sew Batiks, it’s splashes of yummy yellow, fuscia, blue, green and orange. It goes in everything!

  30. That is a beautiful paper pieced heart…I love to paper piece! I’ve enlarged paper piece patterns before because I like the bigger pieces. Thanks for sharing your project and being a part of the blog hop! :O)

    • Yes, this pattern is a winner! I use it so much that I spent some time looking for different ones for this project. In the end, this one was just too perfect! I especially like smaller paper pieced projects for my zippered pouches.

    • I hear you. I have more than one dusty bundle, but my goal is to try and corral them into some sort of order soon. I love that Craftsy heart pattern. It honestly has served a lot of purposes for me.
